Tyler Farrar redeems himself in Spain

Posted on Mon, Sep 20, 2010 at 10:52 AM

Back in July, during the height of the Tour de France, I wrote extensively about the plight of Washington-born cyclist Tyler Farrar. "The Wenatchee Wonder" was expected to be one of the toughest competitors in the sprint stages of cycling's greatest race. But alas, a nasty crash in the early part of the Tour had Farrar wincing with pain, and he was unable to fully contest the sprint stages against rival Mark Cavendish — considered the world's best in that discipline. Even if Farrar had been perfectly healthy, many wondered if he was good enough to best Cavendish.

We now have an answer for that. Farrar won two stages in this month's Vuelta a Espana (one of three "Grand Tours" in Europe, together with the Tour de France and the Giro d'Italia), including yesterday's final stage, in which Farrar absolutely blew past Cavendish near the finish line in Madrid.
