Do you realize the first day of autumn arrives on Wednesday? That means it's time to send summer out with a bang and greet the new season the same way. We have many opportunities to do so in our event listings and Staff Picks.
Here are some highlights for the week ahead:
Monday, Sept. 21
WORDS | It's Spokane Poetry Slam night at The Bartlett, where you can turn the $5 cover charge to get in to $50 for winning the audience vote for best performance.
LIVE BANDS | The WSU Humanitas Festival is off and running in Pullman, and tonight you can catch the "ethno-chaos" Ukrainian crew DakhaBrakha. Chances are you haven't heard them, so here's a little sample.
BENEFIT | Experience a night of Rwandan history and joyful music at One Night with Impanda, a Spokane-based organization raising funds to help Rwandan street kids learn life skills through art education. You can read a bit more about Impanda right here.
WORDS | Pulitzer Prize-winning author Diane McWhorter, who penned Carry Me Home: Birmingham, Alabama, the Climactic Battle of the Civil Rights Revolution, is the headliner of the 12th Annual Northern Idaho Distinguished Humanities Lecture and Dinner and Coeur d'Alene Resort.
Wednesday, Sept. 23
FOOD & DRINK | The MAC is hosting Dining at Downton Abbey: A Trial by Fork, a recreation of the formal dinners often seen in the popular show presented by food historian Tames Alan. The event is offered twice, so no excuse not to enjoy a sip and some food for fans of the show.
LIVE BANDS | Dave and Phil Alvin, who together led the Blasters years ago, are back together on tour and on record, delivering scorching versions of old blues favorites on the new album Lost Time. They play at Chateau Rive in the basement of the Flour Mill on Wednesday. Read our interview with Dave Alvin right here.
LIVE BANDS | Indie-blues duo Little Hurricane hits Spokane for a headlining gig at The Bartlett. Here's a sample:
Thursday, Sept. 24
COMMUNITY | Spokane Public Radio hits the Spokane City Hall to host a discussion called Our Water, Our Future — a dive into what the drought means for Spokane and the surrounding communities.
BENEFIT | The Bing is where you'll find some of Spokane's best and brightest in a showdown of intellect and useless knowledge at the Spokane Trivia Championship.
LIVE BANDS | Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band arrives with an old-timey vibe and serious knack for throwing down raucous live shows. They headline The Bartlett Thursday. Here's a sample:
FOOD & DRINK | The annual Greek Dinner Festival celebrates its 80th year, beginning Thursday and running through Sunday.
Friday, Sept. 25
COMMUNITY | Valleyfest takes off at Mirabeau Point Park, complete with hot-air balloons, a car show, tunes and more. It runs through Sunday.
COMMUNITY | The Spokane Arena is hosting a 20th birthday party with an open house, so if you ever wanted to see what backstage looks like, this is your chance!
THEATER | The Modern Theater's Spokane branch debuts Other Desert Cities, a Tony-nominated (and Pulitzer finalist) drama that explores what happens when the fault lines in a family's relationships are exposed.
