    Two weeks from the July 2 signature deadline, here's what's up with the most talked-about initiatives gunning for the ballot.
      It’s been a bad week for Philip Dawdy, campaign director for Initiative 1068, a measure that would remove all penalties for adults possessing, transporting, growing or selling marijuana. He recently blew a tooth. He’s working 90-hour weeks, got one hour of sleep and is answering questions while lying on a couch because of back spasms.

      There are limits to the persuasive power of a good idea. There are limits to how many people you can find leaping at the chance to stand outside a megastore for eight hours, clutching an 11-by- 17 piece of paper in the pouring rain, pleading with passers-by for their autograph — purely for the pleasure of supporting a good cause.

      This year, a record 77 initiatives are vying for that coveted ballot. “It’s been a phenomenon in this decade,” says David Ammons, spokesman for Washington’s secretary of state office. In 2003, 60 were filed; the number was 57 in 2008.
