Re: “Do-It-Yourself War Stories

What a great book, I need to read it! I have a fascination with War era memoirs, right now I am in fact reading one by Uew Siemon-Netto called Triumph of the Absurd, what an interesting look into the affect the Vietnam war had on all the people involved. 1517legacy.com is his site, his book info is there.

Re: “LEARNING TO LOVE A NEW HOMETOWN

I heard a stat a few days ago which was new to me; Spokane's student population number stands right behind Boston's. Now, if we can just figure out the way to keep more of them here after graduation...

Welcome. Dan.

I can totally relate. Thanks for bringing back those memories of newness and freedom in a new town, Dan. Miss you buddy; getting to read what you're up to helps.

Re: “LEARNING TO LOVE A NEW HOMETOWN

Many a relationship has started in a bar after more than just two drinks. Some turn out alright.

Re: “Old, New and the Commodity of Seattle Cool

"There is a tension at the heart of indie culture between competing ideals and realities, on the one hand, an oppositional formation of outsiders that sees itself as the solution to an excessively homogenized, commercialized media, and on the other hand a form of expression that is itself commercial and that also serves to promote the interests of a class of sophisticated consumers."

Re: “Spirit Matters

Wow... A biting cultural critique of everything the Inlander represents. I am surprised they let you publish it. Perhaps it is difficult to see that a critique can apply to yourself- you are always the exception.

Re: “Facing History

We're not talking about cheating - or even "shabby" we're talking about turning a woman - who is ill - out in the streets and covering it up. And then touting him as a hero. Laying your claim on a piece of land and building some stuff on it - that happens to turn into a city does not a hero make - we need to look at the bodies buried under the foundations to see the whole picture. Frankly, I don't want my kids and grandkids looking up to a man like that. It makes us hypocrites. We live in a new age - we need new heroes - heroines. We need to support the standards that define us as a civilized society.

Re: “EWU's Dancing, Too!

Stuckey's team never made it to the dance...it was Alvin Snow and co.

I'm confused. Is this a real thing? Because I want it.

Re: “Peace, Justice and Fry Sauce

It is an understandable impulse to shrug and write it off as kids being young and stupid. That impulse is significantly less compelling if/when you see kids like that in the process of hitting rock bottom or trying to recover after hitting rock bottom.
