Re: “Hitting the Wall

The persons responsible for hate crimes are the persons who commit them. Explicitly or implicitly blaming hate crimes on Trump turns the issue into a political argument that distracts from the crime and its victim(s), unnecessarily creating controversy. On the other hand, if the goal is to create argument and division, blaming Trump or his "deplorable" supporters is a good strategy.

Re: “Trumped-up Education

The Union argues against choice based on the false premise that it's bad for public schools. But charter schools and other such choices can be successful at the same time public schools are also successful.

Re: “In Defense of Refugees

I'm afraid any refugee should be afraid, since as white males third and fourth generation Americans, in our 60s who happen to be gay, are each day braced for making a run for the border.

Re: “Fuel Us Twice?

You can get a permit for most anything, especially when you promise politicians rosy projections. "Regulating" permitted activity under capitalism - the goal of which is endless growth and profit - is another story altogether. Said capitalist high priest Milton Friedman, "The social responsibility of business is profit". Profit. Period. Not a pure aquifer. Not public health. Not corporate responsibilty. No. None of that. Profit. Period.

Re: “Hopeless for Heroin

Communist countries don't have heroin problems. It's simply not available there. Heroine is here because the government allows it. Everyone of my friends that started using heroin started on pain medications from doctors that were perscribed or sold on the street. If yo I want your kids safe from heroine. Go raise them in a communist country. It's extreme but changing the system is not as easy as moving somewhere else, that already decided heroine is bad.

Re: “Trumped-up Education

"Could the President-elect's support of school choice trickle down to Spokane?"

Let's hope and pray so.

Go Trump.

By introducing competition into education, we will get better educational results for the thousands of dollars we spend on each and every student in WA.

Re: “Barred from Books

It goes without saying that convicted felons who are currently incarcerated have certain rights that are limited. For heaven's sake, their liberty is taken away by being incarcerated.

On the other hand, this seems a bit of a stretch. It is within their discretion but you never know with prison bureaucracy.

Re: “Young, Troubled Minds

There are no mental health counselors who actually provide services in juvenile detention. They simply screen without providing any help. This article needs fact checking. Juvenile detention isn't some utopia where kids get help that is lacking in the community. They are mentally beaten down. There is no rehabilitation in or out of the system. Kids are funnelled in and optimized to be pipelined into adult prisons.

Re: “Shades of Black Lives

The damage caused due to natural disaster in the form of deaths, injuries and losses of property is immense. That requires huge support from everyone, in such situations my friend feel the NGO's support from www.mission-humanitaire-afrique.org is really blissful to the human beings to overcome the trauma and hence she is looking forward to be a part of the human welfare community.

Re: “Unfinished Business

Well maybe the cops did try to cover their tracks. Sure they knew he was dead. Yes the police came when the death by GSW was reported so they knew just as good as death is permanent on earth buy eternal wit God. Lies by the Staties is what lead to this death and mis-use of one's position (law enforcement) continues. This could have been a person stopped for a traffic violation forced to do the same task as Isaish. You take the job in law enforcement get training then force ,trick and mandatevthat others do YOUR JOB for little or no pay just some jacked up promise. Get GOD. Hey LMD1 nobody here on earth is perfect other than ypu, right. I'm out.

Re: “Unforgiven

I am amazed at the critical perspectives and judgmental comments people make about felons or the failures of others. It is like they are in denial of their own imperfections and potential to make a choice that may inadvertently cast the same stigma on their "good name."
I made a stupid choice many years ago while going through a very difficult divorce and hanging out with coworkers at Pepsi to try an illicit substance. I went from the lowest point in my life to feeling amazing; leading to a series of stupid choices and a series of felony convictions. I make no excuses for myself. I chose to use. I didn't however choose to be an addict. Lot's of people drink and never become alcoholic. Many use illicit substances and never become addicted. Some of us are predisposed/genetically vulnerable to the disease. Similar to type 2 diabetes. Poor choices led to the disease, but not everyone that makes poor life choices concerning health develop the disease. The disease of addiction leads to a form of insanity. Nobody in their right mind wake up in the morning and say to themselves, "I think I'll go to jail today, or lose my kids," but faced with those potential consequences, they use/drink anyway. That's insanity. I am appalled at the bad things I did during my active addiction "using" days.
I have worked hard for change. I am not what I did. I even became a licensed CD counselor to help those struggling with substance use so they don't follow my footsteps. Now Washington is progressively legislating my license away. I am working way below my skillset because of my past. My crimes have nothing to do with my work abilities, yet it was dishonest and others were adversely affected by my behaviors then. I wouldn't take a paperclip from work, so to speak today, regardless of what I did then. I just find it hypocritical that restrictions continue to be emposed so broadly and the stigma is still so prevalent in this day of progressive thinking and tolerance. I try to educate in hopes that people will understand and start looking for solutions rather than judging the problem and the people that have it. 12-15 percent of society have the disease of addiction and isn't it interesting that the percentage of people in prison is the same.
I do want to caution people that before they label felons as "scumbags," they understand that they are one choice away from judging themselves.
