Re: “About a Boat

Wonderful and touching chronology. I, too, own a 1971 Jolly Roger, and would love to put together a comprehensive design history. I think this might be a good starting point for that. Is there a way I could contact you, for a little guidance?

Re: “Challengers to the Throne

Are you serious? There is no team in the WCC that can beat Gonzaga this year.

Re: “Modern Times

This play was a part of the schedule from the initial announcement - HOUND was cut and this play was scheduled right in this time slot.

Re: “Idiot Detector

The basic premise of Black's humor is that he and his fans are smarter than people who disagree with them. That's not clever, it's tiresome and cliche. Check out Jerrod Carmichael if you appreciate subversive humor. And he's actually funny.

Re: “Swapping Stories

Maybe these folks should have their trysts on a stage. That way they can claim they're martyrs to their art and that their critics are philistines. There are plenty of people who have that attitude towards Spokanites and would agree.

Re: “My Confession

I don't see any slander or intent to hurt her family, but the family may perceive this behavior as harmful. She is opening her mind to the possibilty of another mindset, one which is curious, accepting, and questioning. A mindset that doesn't condemn you for a sin committed 4000 or so years ago, which requires believing that the only way to be spared from hell is to acknowledge that Jesus will save you from this sin you never committed. Maybe you never were born with this sin. Babies all over the world live and die without exposure to Christianity, and I cannot believe they are all burning in hell for eternity.

Re: “My Confession

I don't see where anyone has told Jordy she should not express her need to separate from a faith based life. The comments to her are stating she is loved regardless of the disregard she has for her families feelings. We all have the freedom of choice and what a blessing that is.

Re: “My Confession

I grew up in the same town as you, not Catholic, but a very strict religious upbringing. I can sympathize with some of your feelings. I don't blame my parents, I believe they were duped into it just as much as I was. I do not practice religion and do not raise my daughter in a specific religion, but I do know that if she comes to me later in her life and says she wants to be involved in one, that is her choice. I learned from my upbringing that I do not want to force anything on my children and I believe the way you feel about religion has happened because, just like me, it was forced regardless of what we wanted and now you are the black sheep for expressing yourself. I applaud you for being honest and choosing for yourself as an adult.

Re: “My Confession

You are a beautiful young woman
You are a gifted writer
You are strong and independent
You have compassion for people and animals
You champion the underdog
You have opportunity in life that many others do not have
You have a family-starting with your Grandmother-that loves you no matter what you write.
You have a lot of growing up to do because you have all of the above because of your Mother.
I have faults
I have fears
I have doubts
I have a mean tongue when I have been drinking
I have matured in 43 years
I don't doubt you mean what you write at the moment because we are both afflicted with self righteous indignation.
I love you Jordy
I want the world to be easy and kind and goodness for you
I want you to apologize to your mother-not for telling it the way you see it is-but for hurting her so deeply.
Please use your talent for good and not evil-you are worth more than lashing out at your family when you feel hurt.
Sincerely, Aunt Shannon

Re: “My Confession

I happen to personally know the Byrd family. I know how much Jordann's mom and dad love her. As a mother I can not think of any greater insult and hurt than to have my child write something like this for the world to read. If Jordy you are as you say an atheist then why hide behind that statement and blame your problems on your parents. They did not make the decisions for you. God has given you free will, to do and to say and to feel any way you choose. So be a grown up and stop playing the victim own up to the things that are making you unhappy. I know that even though this is hurtful to everyone in your family, they will continue to pray for you, because they love you. And no matter how misguided you may think their religion or intentions are they have done things out of love for you. You failed to mention how your family has helped you, emotionally and financially. As a writer or reporter aren't you suppose to cover all side of a story?

Re: “My Confession

I too want to step up and defend the Byrd family against these completely unjustified attacks. Jordy grew up in a Catholic family that was warm, loving and generous. Jordy was a nice kid when she was little, but as teeneage years came she got involved with a bad crowd and began to make some increasingly bad choices. She became arrogant and self-centered, and unfortunately she still thinks she has all the answers. Does her family still pray for her? Yes, and that only shows that despite this kind of scurrilous garbage she writes for the public, they still love her.

Re: “My Confession

Good figuring stuff out. Normally I'm a believer that masochistic self-flaggelation is best left to the middle aged as they mix a few scabs with the blood leaking on the page but you seem authentic. Man's search for meaning ultimately leads to an empty closet.

Re: “My Confession

This column made me very sad. The Byrd family are good, honest, upstanding people. This column must be incredibly hurtful to them. Jordy may have every right under the First Amendment to write this, but his decision to publically mock his family and hold them up to ridicule is self-indulgent. The MacGregors know the Byrds and I am surprised Ted ran this.

It's all just myth, superstition and folklore. Good for you, Jordy.

Re: “About a Boat

Loved the story - I have a '78 American Eagle with nearly as much family history as yours. When my parents sold the cabin, I was sure to cough up enough money to buy it. It still runs top-notch, and will suck the chrome off of many of the fancy ski-boats in my area. Thanks for the read - I completely understand your obsession with the Jolly Roger.
