This is a bit silly, don't you think? There are some great musicians playing in non-contracted orchestras all around the country. Please, let's not pretend that we are better than all those other folks who are just as dedicated to their craft, but chose other priorities. Some of the best musicians in the SSO have had, and continue to have "day jobs". Let's drop that losing argument. Now, if the musicians would like to replace those unused services with Marketing duties, I'm sure the Board and Management would love and appreciate that help! That could be a solution. You seem to think that is quite an easy task. Do you anticipate a guaranteed audience of 1,000 for each concert as a direct result of your own marketing? Because that would be quite amazing. Let's stick with the real issues. We want the Symphony back on stage. Let's find a responsible way to make that happen and keep the orchestra running into the distant future.
Musicians, you CANNOT expect to be paid for services (rehearsals/concerts) that you DO NOT perform or that the community CANNOT sustain! That IS the crux of the problem. The Symphony Society will not survive with that economic drain and with our community base. Paying for absolutely nothing....it´s simply flushing donor money and all other revenue down the drain. Money that is desperately needed! Do you want to save your Symphony? Or, continue to be paid for services that our community cannot support? We want a Symphony, but you are drawing a line in the sand that no Board member can possibly accept without serving a death sentence to the future of the Spokane Symphony. They are trying to save your jobs and the future of our Symphony. Comparing our orchestra to Chicago, Philadelphia and even Syracuse is non-sense. We are a small community with musicians who audition for a job that pays $10,000-17,000. We are not attracting musicians that demand $40,000-135,000. Let´s stop pretending that we are and enjoy and appreciate the great music that this symphony provides, through our wonderful musicians, at the level which we CAN support. Please, go back to the table and accept propose or accept a RESPONSIBLE contract.
