Re: “Email from retired Spokane cop details problematic promotions, rift among top brass

Correction - according to Brian BREEAN it was Kellie Gately that shoves Tom Clouds and not Tracie Meidl.

Re: “Email from retired Spokane cop details problematic promotions, rift among top brass

Sorry Didjahearthat,

Yes, it is who was not promoted. There were more experienced and qualified people that could have been promoted. The folks promoted have a history. Olsen allowed the Holyk investigation to run off the rails at least he was functionally in charge. King I'm told was maintained the Thompson support FaceBook page and was hawking the wrist bracelets for Thompson's defense. The defense was provided by the City so what did this money go for? If this was raised by the Guild to they account for these funds per requirements under 501(c)(4)? Also, I'm told that Tracie was the one who pushed Tom Clouse on the way out of the federal courthouse after the infamous salute.

Is the old guard re-entrenching itself at SPD before the arrival of the new chief?

Look I understand the need to show support for Thompson but do it in private. The optics were very poor. Thompson did make mistakes with the head strikes and taking Holyk on directly without waiting for backup. What killed Thompson was once restrained they kept sitting on him while prone and putting the nonbreathing mask on. Thompson death was probably the result of positional ashyxia. Poor or lack of training? Manslaughter under RCW?

Re: “Can Spokane's police ombudsman weigh in on Ryan Holyk investigation?

Very good article. Perhaps inquest panels would solve this problem?

Keep on digging.

Re: “Fighting Words

Keep up the good work on the Ryan Holyk case:-)

Here's some other thoughts that I posted elsewhere since the new information on this case broke:

Was there an intentional effort to cover-up the Holyk death?

Interesting that County Prosecutor Larry Haskell stated he will review the case again. The case is no different now than it was before. Whether Ryan was struck by the police unit is not relevant for a criminal charge to be filed. What is relevant is the level of recklessness of the deputy and does it rise to the level of vehicular homicide or a degree of manslaughter?

RTC has a first person source that says the County will not go to trial and this case will go to mediation. This will be over the objection of the Sheriff as he will say he wants this to go to trial so the truth will come out. The Sheriff did this in the Creach OIS. Sorry as the County's shared risk insurance pool attorneys concluded in the Creach case there is no way they wish to defend Ryan's case based on the facts and evidence as we now know it in front of a jury. My guess is the settlement will range between $4 to $8 million based on the recklessness of the deputy and the young age of Ryan.

Was there a cover-up probably not. Was the investigation done poorly and did the varied investigators ignore or dismiss major red flags? Yes. There was a significant amount of DNA on the bumper and the extensive trauma to the face of Ryan that is inconsistent with his simply going over his handlebars.

Was there and honest search for the truth? Will this catch the attention of the US DOJ as the Otto Zehm death did? Time will only tell.

I want to publicly thank Dr. Jarrod Carter once reviewing the family's evidence for having the professional integrity to review the evidence and discovered the imprint of the hat's plastic band on the front bumper of the unit near where the DNA was found.
