You know something? There's are many parts of Spokane that already look like Detroit. The economic blight Spokane now faces is the result of your conservative establishment. And don't even go there and tell me that is was a bunch of liberals and it's because of the economic downturn. This stagnation has been going on for years and was caused by the indifference of the real people in control of this town and this county! They have created a system to keep real employers from coming in here especially those who won't do things the way the Spokane "Old Boys" want them to do. They have also failed to address the problem of crime which is the result of economic decay not what some so-called liberals have done! Open your eyes for once! #changespokane
The changes are already happening but why should a group like the Downtown Business Partnership or the Greater Spokane Incorporated for that matter hold sway to who can come in and do business here and who can't? This once again, is an example of the Old Boy Network of Spokane at play. One day, there will come a time when they will eventually lose influence and power over this burg. The sooner, the better!
@Centrist: And what has the conservative establishment of Spokane done lately to address the problems we have now? Also, what have they done about the problems Spokane has had for many years? Looks like they haven't done squat as far as I can see.
The right-wing have had their way for far too long and this is "thanks" to the Old Boy establishment in Spokane and those who agree and support them. It has made Spokane into an insular, inward-looking, moribund, and economically and socially depressed place. It is time to take Spokane in a new direction. We need to make Spokane a open, forward-thinking place with a quality of life to match our fellow Northwest cities like Portland or Seattle. We CAN do this and we WILL do this! #changespokane
I hope we can keep the Council from being dominated by more loony right-wingers like Mike Fagan and move the Council further away from the influence of the Old Boy establishment types like John Ahern. Spokane will never become a more open and progressive place with them hanging around City Hall.
My great hope for this town is that we continue to bring in more newcomers and the younger generation who want to make the changes that stay here. While the changes are coming very slowly, They need to move faster. Spokane needs a change economically, socially, culturally, and dare I say it, politically. These miserable old rich white men are the ones who are really holding Spokane back. We as a people need to get out of this negative mindset that has plagued this community for years. The mindset that things cannot ever change in Spokane, or the "Spokan't" mindset. Wake up, people! Let's take this town and transform it into something better!
If America has any hope to stand tall again, more people are going to have to find alternatives to the two-party system. For far too long the system has been rigged to suit the real powers that be. The ones who have bought and sold the Democrats and Republicans who are now doing their bidding. We need real change in this country and if anybody thinks they will find it in both parties, they are horribly clueless and naive. Einstein was correct when he said that doing the same things over and over again and expecting different results is insanity. It pretty much sums up the American political system very well.
