A decent first look at the new bishop of the Spokane Diocese. However, I wish the interviewer would have challenged some of the blanket statements made by Cupich - such as "Sexual abuse of children is not happening in the church today." - which are patently false. (Check out the Abuse Tracker at www.bishop-accountability.org for a more accurate picture.)To my ears, the new boss sounds one hell of a lot like the old boss. Which makes sense, as no institution or political machine on the planet is better at controlling its message - and its officers - than the Catholic church. I wish the Inlander interviewer would have countered Cupich´s party line when he said ridiculous things like, "...Thirty years ago, the world of psychology...didn’t handle the situation well." The sad fact is, thirty years ago, child abuse and child rape were clearly understood by nearly everyone in this society - including the Catholic church. They were crimes to be immediately reported to the police. The fact that they never reported any of these crimes to police or even to the parents in their own parishes demonstrates where their allegiance begins and ends. This much hasn´t changed in 2000 years.
