Re: “Shot and Killed

It is stunning to see so many people being critical of Spokane area police. There certainly have been some screw ups, but for the most part they do a good job. Most of the critics are clueless about why police choose lethal force over less lethal force options.
They call for pepper spray, which only makes people tear up, have some short term pain, and maybe cough. It doesn´t stop the thug from still putting up a fight, firing a gun or slashing with a knife.
Then they want the TASER to be used, even though it is a notoriously unreliable weapon, especially in winter time when people wear heavy clothing.
They don´t want the police to use batons, they are too mean.
They want the police to use rubber bullets or bean bags, which are also less than reliable, again especially when the person is wearing heavy winter clothing.
The rule is don´t take a less lethal weapon to a gun or knife fight. Well, at least don´t do so until the scene is contained, or you will probably die.
The Zehm case keeps rising to the surface with people claiming Otto was beaten to death. Otto was wrongfully killed, but he wasn´t killed by being beaten to death. A civil case exists, when the Zehm family goes after not only Thompson, but all of the EMS people that failed to monitor the health of their patient.
