Re: “Thompson sentencing begins

RE: 1967 spelling
Spelling Chihuahua was NOT just lucky. Jennifer practiced day and night studying words, and wore out books containing words by studying them. She was not out for sports or any other activities. She just concentrated on being the best speller she could be. She also had a good teacher - Marvin Engel - who brought another speller to the national spelling bee just two years earlier - Sharon Gerdes. To prove Chihuahua is not a lucky or easy word, Paul Harvey even pronounced the word wrong when he announced the winner. He corrected himself the next day.
FYI: Deshler Nebraska is the smallest town to have 2 spellers qualify for the National Spelling Bee. The town has population of 850 and the Peace Lutheran School - at the time - had an enrollment 3rd-8th of about 65.
Incidentally, Marvin Engel - close to 80 - entered an adult spelling contest in Iowa. He won it. He is also on you-tube playing piano with his nose.
Bob Reinke - Jennifer´s brother.
