In a world in which transportation is structured around fossil feul, I am not sure it is fair to criticize people for utilizing the only means available of getting around. And focusing on a lost package of cigerettes seems like a way of not focusing on the concerns being expressed. And who are "these people" that are intellectually incoherent and incapable of organization? The couple guys that the author chose as the center piece for her article or the mobilization of between 100-200 Nez Perce -- three nights in a row -- in opposition to these loads? Where was that story, the REAL story, which is the story I assume the author was sent to cover? Seems to me the author tried her hand at gonzo journalism, and I guess she produced a tale of high adventure, but she certainly did not even scrape the surface of the actually story that was happening around her. Too bad, this could have been a fantastic piece about the Nez Perce who organized these events.
