I read an interesting article about USA 'patriotism' and the importance we place on the flag and national anthem. Most other countries do not regard their flag or anthem with such awe and respect. The article indicated that we do it here because when we were formed we all had come from somewhere else so we needed to create a national identity and patriotism for the new country. That's why the flag, and later the anthem were so revered - so we felt some loyalty and patriotism for this new country. Other countries have longer histories and do not need the symbols as much I guess. In the end a flag is a piece of cloth, it's not who we are and it's not the embodiment of patriotism. Just because you own a flag or say you love your country doesn't mean anything. Actions speak louder than words.
