This pisses me off. Maybe they are going to buy alcohol, maybe not, but if I choose to give my money to someone in need that is exactly what I am going to do. I have worked in social services for over ten years. Why exactly would I funnel my money into a bunch of agencies that having waiting lists and guidelines and limitations and such? Just because all these agencies do good does NOT mean the person asking for change is going to qualify for help from any of these agencies. It is all just a plot to 1) get their cut of your dollar you are donating and 2) push the poor out of downtown Spokane where it offends the folks trying to shop at Nordstrom.
I see New Horizon on this list and I know for a fact they collect all the food stamps from the people entering treatment and then do 90% of their grocery shopping for free at the food bank because they have an agreement with Second Harvest. A lot of social service agencies run this way.
I know a great way to come up with some extra money for the poor...give it directly to the poor rather than pay a bunch of agencies that are classified as non profit and still manage to keep their directors in Seattle vacation homes and BMWs to go out an distribute what is left of our donated dollar to those of the poor they deem "worthy". It is my dollar and I will give it to whomever I want!
