Al, the story has not been beat to death. If anything, dogs being shot by police are not covered by the news media enough. Hardly anyone in Idaho even knows that 5 dogs have been shot by Idaho police officers this year already. Hardly anyone knows that close to 400 dogs have been shot by police officers in the US this year already. It is up to civilians maintaining the statistics for "cop on dog incidents", as police agencies do not. If there were better news coverage on a state and national level, then we could get better funding and legislation to ensure that our officers receive the additional training and are better prepared for their inevitable dog encounter. Then we could lower the number of innocent bystanders being injured, property being damaged by stray bullets, children traumatized, officers injured and dogs maimed or killed. Thank you Inlander and thank you Daniel Walters for keeping this story front and center.
