Sound Advice

There's this band called the Cops that we've been trying to write about for like four months now. They cancelled their first gig in Spokane (at Empyrean) with promises to return. A show on Sept. 23 featuring them popped onto our radar about two months ago before disappearing again. It'd be sweet if they ever come, but the band that remains on that bill (at Empyrean), Bones, mixes grunge, garage and blues in a weird and pervy way (song titles include "Sexploitation" and "Bulge"). They're playing with Dearly Departed. Peep it.

& r & Playing the Sexophone & r &

You never saw Pete Fountain in a thong or Louis Armstrong in plum smugglers. And though (young) Miles Davis was a sex symbol, he'd never put his sinewy arms and chest front and center. Neither would Coltrane. So we bet some purists might be astonished to meet Layla Angulo -- to our knowledge, the world's first jazz saxophonist-slash-sexpot. She's here to make naughty. She brings Latin fusion to CenterStage on Saturday.

& r & What Remains & r &

So how many original members of a band do you need before you can, in good conscience, go on tour under the old name? That's the question that's on our minds as the Beach Boys (minus Brian Wilson, minus Al Jardine, minus Carl Wilson, minus Dennis Wilson, plus Bruce Johnston) hit Northern Quest on Saturday. Apparently originals Mike Love and Johnston of surf-rock's sacred cow warrant the $65 price tag. The votes are in,and the show's sold out.
