Pink Martini’s music has always had a depth you can’t quite put your finger on. It’s evocative of a simpler time, when Sinatra still ruled and things hadn’t quite gone off the rails yet. Even though this music has that vintage sound, it’s actually better (mostly — they do go over the top in places) than what it evokes.

In this era of Mad Men, when we apparently long for the comfort of times that never really existed, you can lose yourself in Pink Martini’s big, bold sounds (“Ohayoo Ohio”) and in the smoothness of China Forbes’ voice (“Over the Valley”).

They are refreshingly silly, too — their back-to-back, he sang/she sang lovers’ spat in “And Then You’re Gone”/“But Now I’m Back” is goofy in a good way, and their cover of the Sesame Street mainstay “Sing” is priceless — and timeless.
