"Scrambles," Bomb the Music Industry!

Scrambles blazes through 13 tracks and uses nearly as many musicians — on everything from drum machines to Game Boys.

Chris Dreyer

Bomb the Music Industry! may just be my new favorite band. Scrambles was released nearly a year ago, but I only just came across it recently — and I just can’t get enough of this freaking album. Apparently recorded on a budget of $50, Scrambles combines lighthearted, clever commentary and narrative with the exuberance of garage rock, the brashness of hardcore punk and the fun, brassy energy of ska.

It’s kinda like if Choking Victim ate Harvey Danger and the Thermals. Scrambles blazes through 13 tracks and utilizes nearly as many musicians — on every instrument from drum machines to trombone, Wurlitzer to Game Boy. Vocalist Jeff Rosenstock sings with honesty and keen humor — randomly moving from songs about employment to songs about whiskey. This record is fun, tight and absolutely insane. Simply put, it kicks ass. Go download it for any price from Quote Unquote Records or buy a physical copy from Asian Man Records to get a 32-page ’zine.

"Xenophanes," Omar Rodriguez-Lopez

The latest from the Mars Volta's Rodriguez-Lop is still littered with wonderfully characteristic weirdness, but it’s still good — even easy — to crack open.
