A British medical hoax linking autism and vaccines stirs debate in the Inland Northwest.

People used to believe ice cream contributed to children developing polio. It sounds ridiculous now, but years ago it made a kind of quirky sense: Polio outbreaks were most common in the summer. Since summer was when the ice cream truck came rolling around, parents desperate to prevent their children from getting polio would ban ice cream.

Ineffective, but harmless. A more recent coincidence, drawing a correlation between autism and vaccination — children were diagnosed with autism soon after the time they received vaccination — has proven to be just as spurious but far more damaging.

In 1998, The Lancet, a respected British medical journal, published a study by Dr. Andrew Wakefield, purporting that the vaccine for measles, mumps and rubella, or MMR, might be contributing to autism.

The study was never replicated. Only 12 children took part in it. Respected scientific studies again and again showed that there was absolutely no evidence vaccines could cause autism. None.

In fact, when MMR vaccines were withdrawn in Japan in 1993, autism diagnoses actually increased.

Now the study has been revealed as a fraud, possibly concocted for Wakefield’s financial gain. He’s since lost his license, and The Lancet retracted the story.

Case closed? Not so fast. The fall-out from the hoax continues to ripple through the autism-concerned community. After the results of the original study first broke, significant numbers of parents, worried about the risk of autism, began declining to have their children vaccinated. Vaccination rates in Britain fell from 95 percent to 80 percent. There was a costly outbreak of measles in Los Angeles. Ten infants died from whooping cough in Chicago. Four unvaccinated children — three in England, one in Ireland — died of measles.

Stephen Luber, a pediatrician at Rockwood Clinic in Spokane, says that he’s seen children become sick because their parents won’t vaccinate them.

“Most of the illnesses that we prevent with vaccines cannot be treated once [it gets] started,” Luber says. Without a vaccine, there’s no cure for polio, diphtheria, whooping cough or tetanus.

The controversy had other, more insidious impacts as well. Dawn Sidell, executive director for the Executive Director for Northwest Autism Center, says blaming parents for their child’s autism — in this case by surmising it was because they got their children vaccinated — has never been helpful.

“It seems like we frequently come back to a position where parents are somehow put in a culpable position for the disorder,” Sidell says. “In 1949, Leo Kanner wrote a paper that emotionally cold mothers were responsible. That had a horrible impact on families — nervous breakdowns, suicides.”

Another recent study examined the relationship between birth-spacing and autism, which worried at least one local parent.

“The parent felt that, ‘I should not have had my kids so close together,’” Sidell says. “These studies that continue to make very loose connections for causes that may not have anything to do with autism continue to send us down these funny rabbit trails.”

"If you don’t want to immunize your child, you should probably find another pediatrician.”

And that distracts parents from the very real battle ahead after a diagnosis of autism.

“We don’t have any treatment options for you.

That’s the part that really gets parents,” Sidell says. “Parents leave reeling from that. They finally get educated and informed about what kind of research they need to move forward. Then they find their insurance doesn’t cover it.”

Sidell says that for kids with autism, and their families, the debate over vaccines “completely detracts from what they need and what needs to be done.” Even worse, just at a time when families need the support of an understanding community, the debate has proved polarizing.

“It’s difficult to have conversations around vaccines and autism,” says Sidell. “People that start with that question, they wait with bated breath for the answer.”

For the medical community, it has also proven to be a challenge. Parents may reject pediatricians who advocate vaccination, and pediatricians may be stymied by patients who won’t follow their recommendations.

Luber tries to be patient with concerned parents.

Most of the time, he finds that if he recommends vaccines enthusiastically, and lays out the science, parents’ concerns are assuaged. But he is fairly emphatic, saying, “If you don’t want to immunize your child, you should probably find another pediatrician.”

Sidell agrees that conversation and compromise can be helpful. Sometimes parents just need reassurance to feel that they are doing everything they can to protect their child. It may be as simple as changing the routine way in which vaccines are administered.

“Is there a way to do the vaccinations over a longer period of time?” she wonders. “Can we do one at a time, or two at a time? You need to get a foot in the door.”

This article is extremely poor investigative journalism and a blatant propaganda piece at best. The article makes the claim that Wakefield´s initial study showing a connection between the same live measles virus strain in the MMR vaccine present in the gut of autistic children leading to leaky gut syndrome has never been replicated. Not true! Dr. Vijendra K. Singh of Utah State University published the following study in New Foundation of Biology, Elsevier Science BV 2001: 447-58 “Neuropathologies in autism provide brain autoantibody and virus serology evidence that links autism to MMR and postulates autism as a neuroautoimmune response that occurs at the neuroimmune biological interface.”
Singh found that auto-antibodies to myelin basic proteins were present in 80% of autistic children but that none were found in the normal children control group and only rarely in all other controls. These auto-antibodies attack the basic proteins that constitute myelin, which surrounds the sheaths of nerve fibers. Regarding the virus serology, autistic children had a significantly higher level of measles virus antibodies as compared to controls, which suggests a temporal link of measles virus with autoimmunity in autism.
Furthermore, Singh found a very important serological association between measles antibody level and anti-MBP, which showed that the higher the measles antibody titer the greater the chance of auto-antibodies to myelin basic protein. The shocking fact is that none of the children had a wild-type measles infection, but they all had the measles mumps rubella (MMR) vaccine.
There are other scientific studies that clearly indict the insane number of vaccines recommended for young infants today, and administered while their body organs and immune system are still developing, it appears that Wakefield is the whipping boy for Big Pharma and their media accomplices to emphatically deny any association between vaccines and autism.

There are 14 studies continually cited as proving no link between vaccines and the subsequent development of autism. Not one of these studies compares vaccinated children to totally unvaccinated children. Even more shocking is the fact that no studies have been performed using the ever increasing ACIP recommended vaccine schedule. These 14 studies are rife with conflicts of interest with the majority indirectly funded by the manufacturers themselves. Many of these studies reach false conclusions or conclusions that have nothing to do with the simple question: Do vaccines contribute to the development of autism? See http://www.fourteenstudies.com/studies.html

“Bad Connections” claims that Dr. Steven Luber has seen children who are sick because their parents won´t vaccinate them. No other factors in the children becoming sick are mentioned, as though vaccines protect children from all manner of diseases. With this kind of tunnel vision, why would parents take their children to a pediatrician at all? A pediatrician´s primary function is to make sure all children in their practice are vaccinated according to the ACIP recommended schedule. Shouldn´t parents choose a health care practitioner that can see beyond the drug for every bug approach to “disease-scare”? Or maybe they should approach their doctor with a different contract in mind. Such as paying them their monthly health insurance premium as long as their entire family is experiencing optimal health. If that is too much to ask, how about forcing their doctor to accept medical liability for the “rare” event of an adverse reaction to the battery of vaccines being recommended. After the February 22, 2011 Supreme Court decision (Bruesewitz v. Wyeth), parents have no legal recourse if their child is injured by a vaccine that was improperly designed or tested; that is, unless their pediatrician or attending physician recommending vaccines accepts medical liability.

Well written, especially for the pharmaceutical related advertisers in the Inlander. However, parents will be ill served by the misinformation in "Bad Connections." A little research would have turned up the fact that polio and ice cream had more in common than summer. One of the several causes of polio was DDT which was sprayed more in summer, sometimes on flies perched on cows. Spraying the flies killed them but also caused the cow to absorb the pesticide which in turn was excreted in her milk. A Doctor Sandler advised avoiding ice cream and soft drinks resulting in a 90% drop in polio rates in 1949 in North Carolina.

Several researchers have confirmed the observations of Dr. Wakefield leading to widespread suspicion that recent publicity about Dr. Wakefield was the result of a smear campaign. In Japan, when the MMR vaccine was withdrawn, the autism rate temporarily dropped, and when 3 individual vaccines (Measles, Mumps and Rubella) given close together in time increased in usage, only then did the autism rate resume it upward trend. The largest study population of children given 6 vaccines compared to children given the same 6 vaccines plus the MMR showed that the children receiving the MMR vaccine had almost one-fourth more autism cases. The authors of this study, done in Denmark, rearranged the figures for publication to hide the different autism rates in the two groups. The lead author, was an employee of the vaccine institute that created the vaccine and one of the secondary authors was Poul Thorsen who was indicted April 13, 2011 on charges of wire fraud and money laundering and was alleged to have stolen more than $1 million in autism research money from the US based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Children can die with measles and other childhood diseases, usually due to mistreatment and deficiencies of critical elements needed to heal from the disease. These elements are often vitamin A and vitamin C. Such nutritionally deficient children can die equally easily from vaccine challenges. Worse, vaccine challenges deplete needed reserves of nutritional elements and children who die within weeks of vaccination seldom have symptoms that lead doctors to recognize that the death was vaccine related. Diseases like polio, diphtheria, whooping cough or tetanus yield to proper treatment far faster than do vaccine injuries which in the case of autism, or even diabetes, typically are chronic.

Parents should not be blamed for their children´s autism but it is inescapable that parents face the burden of becoming educated about the causes of good health, immunizing without vaccines, and the causes of autism including vaccination. Equally important, parents must retake the reins of control over health care decisions from the hands of both politicians and a misinformed medical profession. This article is wrong, wrong, wrong!

"Stephen Luber, a pediatrician at Rockwood Clinic in Spokane, says that he’s seen children become sick because their parents won’t vaccinate them."

Vaccines only supress disease. If the child isn´t injured or dies right away, later up the road they are harmed & many go to early graves after much suffering.

Lunacy has reigned for far too long. The trade off for having childhood disease, that most always strengthened immune systems was replaced by epidemics on a scale that´s so massive it, now, takes 1 in 3 in cancer before age of 65 & 1 in 100 children in neurological disorders called autism.

Doctors have been trained to blame media, saying there has been no increase. They say cancer & autism have always been prominent but we never noticed until media began reporting it. They also blame the rise in autism on better diagnosis but if that was so, we would have noticed these victims all around us, if they had actually been there all along.

We know this is a lie because we can see with our own eyes how widespread both cancer & autism have become.

We never saw such epidemics years back & the rise has been right in step with the increase in vaccinations through the years. We never saw such epidemics years back & the rise has been right in step with the increase in vaccinations through the years. Other toxins let loose on mankind via the air, food & water are to blame as well as harmful drugs but vaccines are definitely the catalyst.

We are a nation of epidemics that´s rippled out to the world because of ignorance & greed.

It is unbelievable yet undeniable if properly investigated.

Then it was stated;

Let´s talk about polio. The fact is the two developers of that vaccine, Salk & Sabin, came out in truth against them. One said the vaccine could actually cause
the disease it was intended for as you will see at the following link. Many wise doctors & scientists have been trying to tell us the truth but have been stifled & ignored until now.

And this one says it all;

Before the good doctor, Wakefield, was sacrificed & framed, we were already on the warpath to save our children from further harm. We thank him for his part in calling attention to the facts & helping raise awareness, knowing all the time his career would be at risk because of it.

And his work has been replicated as I´ll show you in my next comment.
