'Murder the Mountains,' Red Fang

An album that's as good as the live show that's as good as the album.

Murder the Mountains

It´s a chicken/egg thing with Red Fang. On their Relapse debut, the band sound exactly like they do on stage. Exactly. So it makes you wonder: Are their live shows exactly like their records, or did they just perfectly capture the energy, fuzz and grit of their stage show in the studio?

Whatever it is, at this point, you can tell that Red Fang is just stoked to be getting attention for the music (and hilarious videos) they make — and maybe that’s what we’re hearing on Murder the Mountains. It’s a 10-song gem, filled with one sterling track after another. Building tracks like “Wires” and “Hank is Dead” show that this band is a lot more complex than their early bar-rock stand-out “Prehistoric Dog.” The band dips into something decidedly more stoner-y here and there (“Throw Up,” “Into the Eye”), but they’re at their best when they stick to the booze.
