Since its inception in 2003, Downriver Grill has gained a hardcore following of foodie regulars. Every weekend the house is packed to the gills, often with familiar faces seen the weekend prior. The opening of The Flying Goat across the street has done little to divide the masses in the Audobon neighborhood — rather, it’s transformed it into something of a culinary hotspot.

The space has changed little over the years, but the summer of 2011 brought in new executive chef Ryan Stoy, who put his twist on a few of the classic menu items, while keeping as-is a few dishes with cult followings. The gorgonzola fries ($9) — thick, crispy, waffle-cut potatoes fried and smothered in an herbed gorgonzola sauce — are part of every regular’s dinner routine.

Whether you want to go comfort food (deep-fried pound cake, $7), Asian fusion (sesame tuna, $21), Italian (puttanesca, $15), gluten-free (shrimp bisque, $5), or vegan (coriander-crusted tofu, $17), there’s a little something to keep you coming back.
