As the story goes, Norwegian miner Olaus Jeldness hosted Red Mountain’s first winter carnival in 1897, when he invited guests up to the mountain for a “tea party” and later sent them flying down the slopes with wooden sticks strapped to their feet. The festivities during the annual Rossland Winter Carnival have changed quite a bit in the past 115 years, but one thing’s still the same, and that’s the focus on all things fun and snow. During this year’s festivities, snowboarders will sail through the air in rail jam and big air competitions, and the winter night sky will be aglow during a torchlight parade and fireworks show. Treat yourself to some authentic Canadian maple taffy poured and cooled onto the snow at the kids carnival, or learn to race a luge and end the weekend of fun with a relay race down the mountain.
