Interstellar Overdrive -- Here's an odd one: Neo-Floyd prog-rockers Coheed and Cambria will be performing at the prestigious Spokane Valley Mall parking lot (next to Old Navy) on Friday, July 8, at 4:30 pm as part of the Zumiez Couch Tour, a free skateboarding demo/rock concert/marketing juggernaut currently making stops around the country. DC Skate Team members will be on hand to perform gravity-defying tricks -- a prelude to Coheed and Cambria's reality-defying rock.
The group's third album -- its first since inking a big shot deal with Columbia Records -- is called Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV: Volume 1. According to the Columbia press release we received, the album represents the first half of the third installment of the band's sci-fi rock opus recounting the exploits of young Claudio Kilgannon, who is out to avenge the death of his three siblings and parents (Coheed and Cambria). We're not kidding here. And watch out kids -- that blacktop gets mighty hot.
Rattle and Hum -- Hey, we'd wax philosophic with you all day and night on the rise and fall of punk, the transformation of band nomenclature and proper show etiquette -- it's like our sixth sense. But tribal, world music -- specifically the musical traditions of Ghanaian natives? Yeah, we're pretty much clueless.
But what we can tell you is that a group called the African Showboyz is making just that kind of music, performing it around the world and making much more than just a splash. They have packed crowds and festivals from Germany and France, and have recently wowed audiences across the States. And if it isn't unlikely enough to see them in place like Spokane, they'll pop into an even unlikelier venue -- the B-Side -- this week on Tuesday, July 12. Check them out at africanshowboyz.com.
