The Looff Carousel

I-I-I, love to love mah Looff, babe. Yet who knew that, concealed beneath the 54 gleaming carved wooden horses (and one giraffe), lies an intricate web of idler wheels, drive trains, vertical shafts and sectional ring gears? (We thought that was how they got Phil Harris talking at County Commissioner meetings.) Check out the "Mechanical Facts" section of the Riverfront Park Web site, because we're betting that even Charles I. D. Looff himself couldn't make sense of the engineering description there. But let's not forget the aesthetic appeal of our carousel. After all, it's a National Historic Landmark. Carousel season doesn't open until April 20 this year, but it's worth the wait to get a Looff-lift. After all, how often do you get the opportunity to reach out and (literally) grab the brass ring?
