I can understand the communal support of the police department expressed by these 50 officers. Here´s one of their own judged by a jury of his peers which resulted in a guilty verdict (which I personally believe is the right verdict). However, regardless of my own bias, I try to emphasize with these officers. If I had committed a horrible crime and was tried as thus, one of the last things I would want to see is the support of my family and friends. To know that although I did wrong and will now serve for my crime, I would want to know that someone still cared for me and supported me. I don´t think this salute was intended to be slight on the case or towards the Zehm family but just a public acknowledgement that this man still had friends and that they would support him. I don´t know the mentality or the hearts of these 50 officers or the mindset of the convicted, but I would hope that this act, which may seem senseless, was done out of good intentions.
It´s unfortunate the evil, pain and brokenness that was exposed and experienced by a lot of people throughout this situation. Nov 04, 2011 |Reply to this comment
