Given a Voice -- We don't want this to sound preachy, but here in the Bin we've been struck lately by how hard the holidays must be for those who struggle just to get by. We know we're not alone: The Union Gospel Mission's "What to Give the Man Who Has Nothing" billboards around town have caused more than a few of us to pause and think during the morning commute. So we're pleased to announce The Voiceless Among Us, a new CD project made possible by Covenant Christian Church and SNAP, with a grant from the Rotary Club. Voiceless is a collection of songs written and performed by more than 40 homeless people in the Spokane area, as well as the church's pastor, Michael Rice-Sauer. Voiceless also features poetry and artwork by homeless children and is available locally at Auntie's and Borders for $13, or at Covenant Christian Church, 5616 S. Palouse Highway, for a $10 donation. Civic Responsibility -- Spokane Civic Theatre has selected its new artistic director: Yvonne A.K. Johnson. Originally from Milwaukee, Wis., Johnson has served as a producing and artistic director of theaters in Minneapolis/St. Paul and London. She comes recommended as "an excellent collaborator" and as someone with "a willingness to listen to every actor who walked through her door with a concern." Beginning Jan. 10, Johnson will replace Jack Phillips, who was fired in May. On an interim basis, Charlotte Boutz will continue as director of marketing and operations; the Civic's intention is to continue with the two-director (artistic and managing) model of leadership.

Well, that's Craig -- the man behind the list, and the best friend you'll ever have. Don't know what we mean? Just tap into Craigslist.org, the Web site started in the mid-'90s by a dude named Craig who just wanted to tell some people about cool stuff to do in San Francisco. It soon expanded to a catch-all bulletin board, with postings for jobs, housing and even online forums. After reaching out to other big sites like Seattle and Boston, Craig is letting Spokane jump on board. So whoever you are, show Craig that Spokane is ready for Craigslist. And let Craig make your life that much easier.
