Come and Get 'Em -- If you missed out on David Sedaris' packed gig at the Met several years ago, then you already understand the importance of getting your Get Lit! tickets early. The rest of you, listen up. This year's Get Lit! festival isn't until April 17-23, but tickets are on sale now. In addition to a return engagement featuring Mr. Sedaris, this year's roster includes Salman Rushdie (whose novel The Satanic Verses put a price on his head and forced him into hiding for nine years), former U.S. Poet Laureate Rita Dove, Iron John author Robert Bly, NPR radio personality and former Morning Edition host Bob Edwards and, for the kids, Robert Munsch, author of Love You Forever. The week-long festival also includes a number of local events, including readings by EWU Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing students, local high school students and "Northwest Legends." Speaking of Good Writin' -- The deadline for our Nov. 26 Short Fiction Contest is fast approaching, kids. What we're looking for is the kind of riveting short story -- set in the Northwest and between 4,000 and 7,000 words -- that might make Dave Eggers weep at his relative lack of staggering genius. As in years past, the winning short story will get not only a handsome gift certificate from Auntie's Bookstore and a reading for its author, but also the nod of approval from a celebrity judge -- Sherman Alexie and Jess Walter have judged in years past -- and the artistic interpretation of a regional contemporary artist. Meet Troy -- Remember him? That soft-spoken Spokane boy with the mysterious Southern drawl and killer boardroom instincts? That's right, The Apprentice's Troy McClain (who graduated from Mead before moving to Boise) is coming to town, and you can meet him this Sunday at River Park Square's "Circle of Lakes" from 1-3:30 pm. While here, McClain will discuss both his experiences on The Apprentice and life after. McClain's appearance is being facilitated by the Connect Northwest Entrepreneur Program, and it's free and open to the public.





Another Verdict? -- Tune into PAX Monday night at 10 pm to see how another jury would try the case of the State of Washington vs. Donald Skojol. That case, as you might recall, involves a Spokane man who went after his 76-year-old neighbor with a lawn trimmer in 2002. At issue? Whether a "piece of lawn equipment can be considered an assault weapon." Good times!
