Ring In the Bing


Sure, you wanna be there when they slap a new sign on the Met and call it the Bing Crosby Theater. But on Friday, Dec. 8, what exactly will you get for your $25-to-$100 ticket? Starting at noon, they'll show three Bing flicks: Going My Way, The Road to Morocco and White Christmas. All kinds of Bing memorabilia will be on display, including Gonzaga's duplicate of Bing's Best Actor Oscar for The Bells of St. Mary's. At 7 pm, the theater's new sign will be unveiled. And in the headliner ticketed event at 8 pm, Kathryn Crosby (who was married to Bing from 1957-77) will perform a cabaret show called "My Life With Bing." The Advocates for the Bing Crosby Theater, by the way, plan on staying active by funding music festivals, film festivals and "family-friendly" theater at the Bing. We're not art critics. We just like looking at all the pretty colors. That's how we realized the through-line among our favorites at Inland Craft Warnings: They were all really pretty. They included the ceramic saxophones of Steve Smeed (Eugene, Ore.), the pine carvings of Allen and Mary Dee Dodge (Coeur d'Alene), the ceramic birdhouses of Patsy Thola Chamberlain (Sedro-Woolley, Wash.), and the whimsical felt hats of Lauri Chambers (Nordland, Wash.).





This Is How You Spell "Pedagogical Proficiency"


Washington state's only two nominees for the national Title I Distinguished School awards are both from our area. Cooper Elementary School was recognized for student achievement in math and reading, while Shaw Middle School was honored for closing the achievement gap among students who are poor, minorities, disabled or have limited English proficiency. Each school will receive $5,000 from OSPI. Congrats!

Saw Dennis Hession leaving Cowles Auditorium right after the start of the second half of Saturday night's Whitworth jazz concert with Robin Eubanks. Don't know if that's a commentary on tromboning, but the mayor sure missed a good finale: Eubanks created echoing, otherworldly sounds during his electrified solos.
