Jazzin' the Jump Blues


A Bourbon Street fa & ccedil;ade with flickering street lamps. A figure emerges, plinks a few notes on the piano, reveals himself as Harry Connick Jr. He'd driven straight through from his last gig in Reno, but he pounded an old upright on "St. James Infirmary," switched to organ for "Basin Street Blues" and even invited a 13-year-old kid onstage to play a little Beethoven.





Good at Jigsaw Puzzles?


Ken Spiering's new mural at Mobius Kids is a 22-foot-long tile creation depicting two dozen animal species frolicking along a bend of the Spokane River. Teams of computer designers and ceramics experts helped assemble the 3,000 pieces of tile in 70 different colors. We made a point of seeking out five creative types at ArtFest, yet all five had creatively wandered off from their booths. The sculptures and paintings were momentarily defenseless, and we were tempted... but then the one-man band came by with wings a-flappin', reminding us once again of art's timelessness and universality.
