When BOAN (pronounced like moan) plays its wobbly version of warped electronic music, it’s almost hard to stay standing. It feels like you could be time travelling or progressing quickly through a wormhole. Adding to that sense of floating through space is lead singer Mariana Saldana’s haunting but punchy vocals and trippy dance moves she likely picked up from watching The Ring. The duo from Austin accurately refers to its sound as “Texas acid wave music.” Recently playing SXSW (just like seemingly every other band in the world) at the Holodeck Record label stage, they’re now paired perfectly well on tour with Montreal-based electro-poet Marie Davidson.
