Stranded in the year 2000 with a selection of my favorites from this past year, you might find me surviving nicely with:

Mystery White Boy by Jeff Buckley. Who else can convincingly cover "The Man That Got Away" by Judy Garland AND launch into a fierce, electric, 10-minute version of Alex Chilton's "Kanga Roo"? This live album testifies to the late Buckley's adaptable musical spirituality and effortless talent.

If aliens were to make music beamed to our planet for the enrichment of humanoids, it would sound like Kid A from Radiohead.

Patti Smith's Gung Ho. Ms. Smith has created one of her most brilliant albums. Once again, she skillfully blends politics, rock 'n' roll and poetry that inspire the mind, heart and social conscience.

Stories From the City, Stories From the Sea by PJ Harvey is catchy, smart, strong and sexy. Both moody and playful, PJ crafts evolved, tantalizing songs that unite love and eros.

Can I include a huge, multi-CD set here? Massive Attack's Singles 90-98 Box Set was out of print for almost two years but re-released in Europe only for 2000. This 11-CD set captures the groundbreaking creativity of one of the most unique modern bands.
