Dining with Diversity

Lasagna at church!

Even though we learn as children to value differences, it’s a lesson that often requires refreshing as adults (see: cable news).

In its fourth year, the Food For Thought Community Dinner is aiming to remind people how to talk to one another again. The dinner is put on by the Spokane Homeless Coalition, and attracts individuals from all walks of life who are looking to enjoy the company of those they don’t normally interact with.

“It was started for that purpose, to bring the more privileged and less privileged together,” says Lauren Ballard, one of the coordinators of the event.

Everyone is welcome, but this year Ballard says she and her team are aiming to draw in even more diversity by inviting politicians and city council members in addition to students, professors and those at homeless shelters. Past events have been packed, and space is limited to about 250 guests. Ballard adds they had to turn some people away last year because they reached capacity.

The dinner, donated by Sodexo, will be served in courses consisting of lasagna (vegetarian options available), vegetables, salad, bread, dessert and beverages.

It’s an event with big potential for all in attendance, but the concept is simple enough.

“No agenda, we’re just all here to eat with one another,” says Ballard.
