Enjoy the Inland Northwest’s summer beauty on a trip unlike many others — from a vintage rail car during one of the weekend train rides hosted by the North Pend Oreille Valley Lions Club every summer. The hour-and-a-half-long journey takes riders across tracks built through the mountains back in 1910, offering breathtaking views of the Box Canyon Dam from atop a tall trestle. Be prepared for the complete and cool darkness of a couple of mountain tunnels. It’s a day trip that any family should enjoy, and one I fondly remember from my own childhood, leaning out the open car windows to take in the world from a vantage point more scenic than many road trips could offer.
