City by the Sea

Robert De Niro plays a real-life New York detective, who, as a boy, lived through the execution of his criminal father and now must go after his own son, who has been fingered in a murder. De Niro goes the interior route as an actor, remaining calm throughout all the emotional turmoil. But it's James Franco (Spider-Man) who gets accolades as the son who keeps falling deeper into trouble. William Forsythe, as always, is the scariest man onscreen. (ES) Rated: R

Lovely and Amazing

Catherine Keener (Being John Malkovich, Full Frontal) and Brenda Blethyn (Secrets and Lies, Little Voice) star in this smart comedy about four women, all related to one another, who are barely keeping their heads above their own individual neuroses. The follow-up to director Nicole Holofcener's 1996 indie hit Walking and Talking, Lovely and Amazing has been described as "an acutely witty and moving comedy" (Karen Durbin, Elle) and "undoubtedly one of the smartest films about women to come along in quite a while." Swimfan

What Fatal Attraction did for married men looking for a quick little fling, Swimfan now does for the Abercrombie & amp; Fitch set. A prep school swim star (Jesse Bradford) has an ill-advised one-nighter with sultry-but-menacing Erika Christenson. She may not boil his bunny, but she can get him kicked off the swim team and stage a car "accident." Rated: PG-13
