Opening Films

13 Going on 30 -- Despite resemblances to many, many movies that have come before, this Big-like bite of bubble gum -- directed by Tadpole's Gary Winick -- is the kind of flawed but effervescent romantic comedy that soars on the chemistry of its central duo, Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo. (They're sublimely dorky together.) With Andy Serkis and Judy Greer. (RP) Rated: PG-13

Man on Fire -- Denzel Washington plays a morally shady former government operative taking odd jobs in Mexico City. When he's hired by a wealthy family to bodyguard their daughter (the ever precocious Dakota Fanning), his life begins to return to some semblance of normality. Of course this is a thriller, which means the kid gets kidnapped and Denzel is required to frown frequently and kick mucho butt. Rated: R
