Remembering Expo Celebration

For younger generations, it’s hard to imagine what Riverfront Park looked like — even more so the railyard maze that it replaced — in the early days of Expo ’74, when the iconic Pavillion was shiny and new and white exhibit tents dotted the horizon. As the citywide celebration of Expo’s 40th anniversary continues, the park hosts a day of guided history tours to point out World’s Fair relics and historic sites. Also: 74-cent hot dogs, local live music and IMAX presentations on the park’s past and envisioned future. In the main highlight at 2 pm, our beloved curiosity the Garbage Goat celebrates its 40th birthday with something sweet rather than the usual stinky refuse, as Sister Paula Turnbull rewards her creation with a slice of birthday cake.
