All around town

Hey crew, there are lots of fairly cool live music doings this weekend -- and beyond: all-ages action, CD release parties, benefits, terrifying, half-naked gorillas and rabbits (um, wait a sec, I think that last one was part of a dream I had last night). Anyway, there's much to do about music so get out there and get some.


This week, it seems, Friday night reigns supreme. The following shows all happen on Dec. 14th. At the Shop coffeehouse is where you will find not one but two New York singer/songwriter/guitarists (Edie Carey and Andrew Kerr) performing for your pleasure starting at 7 p.m. Jason from the Shop describes Carey as "Sarah MacLachlan with an edge." Come decide for yourself. The all-ages show is a benefit for Stop the Clock (a group working to stop sexual violence in our area) and the cover is $5.


Downtown at Mootsy's, those sardonic, self-deprecating nogoodnicks, Mulligan (Chris White on piano, Brett Dechenne on sax, Aaron Saye on drums and Greg White on bass) are throwing a CD release party to herald the birth of their latest locally produced opus, Striped Suit: Lo-Fi. Yes, gang, it's finally here. The show with Jupiter Effect opening gets going at around 9 p.m. The cover? Well that's just three bucks (about the same as a pint of Loudmouth Soup, eh?).


The Big Dipper lurches to life at 7 p.m. with an all-ages show featuring the alternative metallic heaviness that is Flyreal. Studderfly, Self-Inheritance and Distress are also on the bill. And $7 will get you in the door.


How can you go wrong with a name like Honest Abe & amp; The Gettysburg Address? Find out at Ichabod's North, starting at 9 p.m. The band will play with American Zero, Love Letters to Hate and Threshold. Do it -- if for no other reason -- so that music of the people, by the people and for the people shall not perish from the earth. Expect something like a $4 cover. -- Mike Corrigan





Feliz Navidad -- Next Thursday, Dec. 20, Far West Billiards will host a Latin-American Christmas party with food, drink, live music and south of the border flair to spare. The event itself is a benefit with the proceeds going to provide groceries and gifts to low-income Latin American families in Spokane. Ten bucks at the door will get you into the party which will feature drink specials, door prizes and live dance music courtesy of everyone's favorite local Latin band, MiLonga.
