The sun’s out consistently, the birds are singing more, many of our cars are covered in fallen pollen. That can only mean one thing: Spring is finally here! Whether you’ve got a green thumb and meticulously planned planter box, or you’ve killed every plant you’ve ever owned and are looking for the one that changes it all, these garden supply stores in the Spokane-Coeur d’Alene area have got you covered for a successful spring. Or, at least that’s what Inlander readers told us this year in our annual Best Of the Inland Northwest issue.
VANHOFF’S GARDEN CENTER
Two months ago, Inlander readers decided that Vanhoff’s Garden Center was the best garden supply store in North Idaho and it’s easy to see why. In addition to Vanhoff’s large collection of plants and tools, it also offers shoppers tons of home decor and garden art options. The Coeur d’Alene garden center sells annuals, perennials, trees and shrubs with an emphasis on hard-to-find varieties. Plus, Vanhoff’s sources its plants from wholesale growers less than an hour away in Spirit Lake.
Open Mon-Sat from 9 am-5:30 pm; 1844 N. Government Way, Coeur d’Alene
THE PLANT FARM
In 1969, Scott Creach and his wife Imogene made their first foray into farming with a batch of tomatoes. However, their attempt yielded more than their family could eat, so they made the most logical next decision and opened a garden store in the Spokane area, or what’s now Spokane Valley. For the last half century, the garden store has been one of the best places to get a house plant that’s perfect for anyone. Now The Plant Farm is still selling a large selection of house plants in the same spot Creach began the business five decades ago.
Open Mon-Sat from 10 am-6 pm; 14208 E. Fourth Ave. Spokane Valley
BLUE MOON GARDEN & NURSERY
While Blue Moon Garden & Nursery has gone by many names in the last century — Nissen Greenhouse in the 1920s, Wallace Greenhouse in the 1930s and later Hangman Valley Gardens and then Hangman Valley Greenhouses — it’s always been a place to find plants native to the Spokane area. Blue Moon has always focused on selling gardeners a hardy, healthy stock of native plants because they don’t need a ton of resources to succeed in the soil. Over the years, the nursery under the leadership of Terese Palaia has made many upgrades, such as replacing glass-covered, steam-heated greenhouses with poly-covered, gas-heated structures, changing field soil out for soilless media and metal cans have been replaced by plastic and soon to be biodegradable pots.
Open Wed-Sat from 10 am-6 pm, Sun from 11 am-5 pm; 1732 S. Inland Empire Way
NEW LEAF NURSERY
From hanging flower baskets and house plants, to herbs, berries and veggie starts, New Leaf Nursery has tons of gardening options. However, New Leaf has made itself just as much a place to find community as it is a place to find plants. With a handful of events every month, including classes on how to create hanging plants, painting nights at the nursery and an annual garden tour, the nursery has created an environment where folks feel more connected to the green thumbs around them. It’s even got space for the youngest gardeners with the Lil’ Sprouts Garden Club. If you’re looking for apples, cherries, peaches or pears, New Leaf also has a selection of fruit trees in its greenhouse. Fill out an application at newleafnurseryhayden.com/wish-list-form for the chance to get one.

NORTHWEST SEED & PET
Unlike any other garden supply store on this list, Northwest Seed & Pet has a wide selection for our furry friends in addition to its stock of gardening supplies. It’s a business model that founder Harry Gross decided would be beneficial soon after the store opened 80 years ago. So when you visit one of its two Spokane locations you can find items for cats, dogs, fish, birds and reptiles as well as seeds, flower starters, soil and a bunch of garden art. Northwest Seed & Pet also offers a helpful identification service where customers can send in pictures of plants, weeds and local animals to find out what they are and how they can garden with them in mind.
Open Mon-Sat from 8 am-7 pm, Sun from 9 am-6 pm; 2422 E. Sprague Ave.
Open Mon-Sun from 9 am-6 pm; 7302 N. Division St.
GIBSON’S NURSERY & LANDSCAPE SUPPLY
When you start gardening it’s normal to purchase a few pots or a single flower bed to test out your growing power. However, as you gain more experience you’ll begin to need more space for all your babies to keep growing. That’s where Gibson’s Nursery & Landscape Supply comes in. Operating in Spokane Valley since 1978, Gibson’s has everything you could possibly need, from pavers and different types of rock to water features and firepits, to spruce up the yard. Customers can also place custom orders to pick up the specialty materials they need for their gardening projects. Delivery is available throughout Eastern Washington, too.

JUDY’S ENCHANTED GARDEN
Judy’s Enchanted Garden is a magical place that’s been hidden inside the northwest Spokane Audubon-Downriver neighborhood for more than two decades. They’ve been successful over the years due to their faithful dedication to their customers, neighbors and the region’s other small businesses. In addition to the garden store’s supply of outdoor decor, it’s filled with beautiful, and tasty, options for gardeners, such as small 4 inch pansies, a handful of roses, black mondo grass, red and golden raspberries and blueberries. Plus, each holiday season, Judy’s sells Christmas trees to festive Spokanites.

ROSARIUM GARDEN CENTER
Rosarium Garden Center is one of the best places in the Spokane-Coeur d’Alene area to find roses. Its collection includes hybrid teas, floribundas, miniatures, climbing, hardy Canadian, and David Austin English roses, all of which are known for their hardy root systems that are perfect for Inland Northwest planting. Rosarium isn’t just a place to buy roses though, it’s also a picturesque wedding destination south of Latah Valley. Get married on the Grand Lawn surrounded by a garden of white flowers or perhaps say “I do” under the Laburnum Arch, a 50-foot arched pathway dripping with the yellow blooms of the golden chain tree. RITTERS GARDEN & GIFT
(VOTED BEST GARDEN CENTER 2025)
Ritters Garden & Gift is a staple for gardeners in the Inland Northwest as evidenced by its consecutive wins in the best garden supply store category in our annual Best Of readers’ poll. With killer plant collections and a year-round schedule for gardeners of all skill levels, that award isn’t a shocker. Its helpful signage is meant to teach customers useful information like if something is pet-friendly or what amount of light and water the plant wants. The store also has tons of home decor from kitchen accessories and gardening books to florally scented lotions and handsoaps. And you can’t forget the lovely customer service from the shop’s two top feline employees Petunia and Felix.
