Imagine a week without your cellphone. Hard, right? Now imagine a 16-year-old spending a week without a phone.
Django Holt says it’s not impossible.
“I don’t think about it at all,” says Holt, an 18-year-old freshman at North Idaho College who has gone phone-free at the Teen Wilderness Camp three times now. “I don’t miss it. I don’t need it. It doesn’t even come to mind.”
The weeklong camp, directed by Eureka Institute, takes about a dozen teenagers between the ages of 14 and 17 on a backpacking trip through Idaho’s rugged Selkirk Mountains. Each camper carries his or her tent, sleeping bag, clothes and food. No electronics allowed.
Holt refers to backpacking as an addiction.
“I don’t think I could stop if I tried,” he says “It’s an experience that has really helped me grow. Just being out in the woods with friends, I was learning a lot about other people and myself at the same time.”
From the 7,260-foot Roman Nose Peak to the Chimney Rock area — home to granite towers carved out by glaciers — the trip is a chance for “something a little more adventurous,” says program director Tracy Fox.
“It’s a rare opportunity,” Fox says. “They get to explore the mountains and high alpine lakes. It’s a great alternative to the technology culture a lot of the kids are spending most of their time recreating with.”
Campers start on a Sunday afternoon at the Eureka Mountain Center (6162 Eureka Rd., Sagle, Idaho), where guides check everyone’s gear for comfort and safety and teach the teens how to prepare a meal plan for the trip. (The camp supplies food, but campers are responsible for rationing and packaging it for the week.)
The next morning, the group takes a van to the trailhead and spends the week hiking, camping, swimming and exploring.
“There are challenges, and they learn a lot about themselves and what they’re capable of — that they can meet those challenges,” Fox says.
Guides take the classic leave-no-trace principles seriously and teach kids the basics of mountaineering and living off the land. The Eureka Institute works with local licensed guides for the trip. Plus, the company got its outfitter license last year, allowing its programs to take kids even farther into the backwoods.
“They’re getting a wealth of knowledge, rather than just a day hike,” Fox says.
At the week’s end, campers return to the Eureka Mountain Center, where they perform a skit at the “Big Show,” which is also part of the center’s program for younger campers, Camp Eureka. (Parents and friends are invited.)
The next morning, after closing ceremonies and a final group photo, the camp is complete. By that day, Fox says, many of the campers have undergone big changes.
“The independence and sense of accomplishment are huge,” Fox says. “They can hike up a mountain and come down on the other side and look back and say, ‘Wow. I did that.’”
