t's upon us again: Volume, the Inlander's annual music festival, is heading into its eighth year, and we'll be taking over downtown Spokane with live music on May 31 and June 1.That's two days. 11 stages. About 100 regional and touring acts. Only $29. Passes are on sale now.
So what can you expect to hear this time around? Well, what do you like to listen to? Because we've definitely got something for you.
Some headliners we're excited about: Spiral Stairs is the solo project of founding Pavement guitarist Scott Kannberg, whose latest album We Wanna Be Hyp-No-Tized is a collection of bright, insistent pop-rock songs. He's '90s indie royalty. Portland duo The Body is known for its punishing, decibel-shattering sound, a head-on collision between metal, industrial and noise-rock. Black Marble is producer-songwriter Chris Stewart's outlet for dreamy, shimmering synth soundscapes, existing somewhere between new wave and chillwave.
Also in the mix are Chong the Nomad, Among Authors, Moorea Masa and the Mood and Smokey Brights, as well as some returning locals, including singer-songwriter Kevin Long and former Mon Cheri frontman Pat McHenry's new country project Santa Poco.
And we have one more big name on our roster that we can't announce just yet — expect to find out who when we're closer to Volume time.

But even if you stuck to purely local artists on your Volume venture, you'd still come away with some wild variety. We've got the dance-y, soul-inflected party starters Super Sparkle, who were just voted best local band by Inlander readers. Jango, another Best Of winner for favorite Spokane hip-hop artist, is also taking the stage. And beyond that, check out the meat-and-potatoes riff rock of Indian Goat, the glam power-pop quartet Atari Ferrari, the folk-pop mainstays Mama Doll, the synth freak-outs of Flee the Century, classic soul favorites from Blake Braley, and many more.Volume's footprint is getting bigger this year, too. We'll have artists playing in 11 venues (many of which are all-ages), and we're expanding into Browne's Addition at the soon-to-be-open Lucky You Lounge and with an outdoor stage (we're calling it a "garage party") at River City Brewing.
