Joshua Paul Davis is DJ Shadow — a man who doesn’t have fans but followers. His debut record Endtroducing..... — an album completely made from samples — broke every rule. Shadow bent and manipulated sounds, voices, beats and keyboards to create a trip-hop/soul/jazz collision that was like no record before it. And it stands — unquestionably — as one of the best albums of the 1990s. And with it, he inspired a generation of artists, home engineers and turntable geeks to do the same.
This is an album of inside-out versions of Shadow tracks made by fans. The “Building Steam With a Grain of Salt” remix adds a layer of drum and bass. The sexed-up version of “What Does Your Soul Look Like” is a top-down, high-on-downers Sunset Boulevard cruise. At the end, Tiger Mendoza pits Shadow against Everything but the Girl on “Missing on the Motorway.” Perfect. Beautiful.
