Wild Things -- One of our favorite things here in the Bin, dear reader, is telling you what to do. (Sometimes we get downright bossy.) Therefore, if you're not doing anything Friday night, we command you to check out "Extended Awareness" at Bitters Co.


A benefit for the Kettle Range Conservation Group, "Extended Awareness" is a chance for artists inspired by the wilderness to attempt to give something back. The evening's schedule includes Darin Schaeffer on eclectic, electric bass; Paul Lindholdt's literary, nature-inspired works; Lynn Rigney Schott's poetry; and a slide show of areas in the Selkirk Range that the Kettle Range Conservation Group hopes to protect. The Visual Music Movement Theater, featuring Thomas Arthur and Paul Ely Smith, caps off the evening with a flourish. Check out our Calendar of Events for details!





Go Fish -- If you're a Food Network fan, keep an eye on The Best Of with Jill Cordes and Marc Silverstein during the month of November. Host Cordes and a film crew descended on our own Milford's Fish House earlier this week to find out what makes this eatery such a standout local favorite.


"It's a viewer's choice program," explains owner-chef Jerry Young. "Someone usually lets them know about a great restaurant and then they send someone here to check it out."


The Food Network people were impressed enough to schedule a segment on an upcoming episode of The Best Of, in which Cordes and Silverstein travel all over the United States, sampling the best in regional and local cuisine. Here in the Bin we're wondering which delicious dish is getting ready for its close-up - the alder-smoked salmon? The halibut on a plank? Such musings make us drool....





Rainbow Picnic -- Maybe they should add a letter to the alphabet soup and call it the LGBTQS picnic - because it isn't only Lesbian-Gay-Bisexual-Transgendered-and-Questioning people who are welcome at this weekend's picnic. On Sunday from 4-6:30 pm at Coeur d'Alene Park in Browne's Addition, S-people - straight people - are welcome, too. There will be face painting and children's games, volleyball for the adults, music provided by DJs, plenty of food (including hot dogs, chips and ice cream) and a rather unusual drill team. After all, whatever your sexual orientation, you've gotta love any group calling itself the Giant Ass Drum Corps. Call 455-8993.





Flush Your Teacher -- Don't miss the carnival (this Saturday from 11 am-4 pm) at Rogers High School in support of the Pirates' performing arts programs. There'll be a 22-foot slide, pony rides, a fishing pond, all the hot dogs and cotton candy you could ever eat, and the ever-popular flush-your-teacher attraction. No admission charge!
