In the music category, local artist Miho Takekawa was one of just four award winners from among 54 applicants. Thanks to all for enriching our local arts scene, and congrats!





Arnie's Army & r & Spokane is declaring Arnie Carruthers Day and celebrating his half-century of contributions to the Spokane jazz scene on Thursday, Nov. 10, at 11 am in SCC's Lair. Nick Klassen -- a student in Mike Caldwell's music appreciation course at SCC, who also happens to be Carruthers' grandson -- will deliver a presentation on improvisation in jazz, followed by drummer Rick Westrick and bassist Eugene Jablonsky's demonstrations of how they lay in rhythm and harmony on top of a jazz groove. The 76-year-old local "King of Jazz" will also speak and get in some of his right-handed piano licks. Call 533-7474.





No Jokin' & r & After a productive three-and-a-half-year tenure that saw French Impressionists visiting Spokane, Jochen Wierich will be leaving the MAC as of Dec. 1 to become Curator of Art at the Cheekwood Botanical Gardens and Art Museum in Nashville, Tenn. CEO Bruce Eldredge will chair a national search committee, which expects to take several months to complete its task. Good luck, Jochen!





Fictive Experiments & r & Faculty from both Gonzaga and Whitworth will share their expertise in the Spokane River Writers Workshop on Saturday at the Bozarth Mansion. After manuscript sessions and lunch, there will be discussions from 1:15-3:30 pm on such topics as freelancing, invention strategies, creative nonfiction, creating characters, poets and writer's block, line and form in poetry, time management for writers and getting published. Angels Watchin' Over Me & r & Christ Kitchen will hold its annual fund-raiser on Monday, Nov. 7, with a silent art auction at 10:30 am and luncheon at noon, at First Pres, 318 S. Cedar St.


Since CK is supported by local churches, it's no surprise that its auction has a religious theme, too. Local artists do their own versions of the Nativity, using just about every medium, from oil painting to calligraphy to watercolors. Last year, the event raised $30,000 for the CK job training program, which was founded by Jan Martinez eight years ago.
