Lewiston native and UI grad Karney Hatch has filmed a documentary exposing the banking industry's predatory lending practices, interviewing everybody from Ralph Nader to "Mr. X, a loan shark" along the way, and it's showing on Wednesday, Aug. 22, at 7:30 pm at Sandpoint's Panida Theater. Getting All Foxy on Us
The Fox Theater will recreate its 1931 opening when 450 duded-up folks plunk down $200 apiece to dine in elegance at the Davenport Hotel, then stroll down Sprague to hear opera superstar Frederica von Stade (despite the name, she was born in New Jersey) sing the music of Ravel just after Eckart Preu leads the Spokane Symphony in music of Mozart, Respighi and his brother Hans Peter. (The rest of us can get in for $40 to $125.)
Nov. 18 brings Community Day: eight hours of free drama, dance and another performance by the SSO. On Nov. 19, Tony Bennett will leave some of his heart in Spokane. Tickets: $100-$200. The fourth and final night of the Grand Opening Gala brings more affordable tickets ($10-$30) for a night of blues and jazz with a couple of local acts, the Spokane Jazz Orchestra and Too Slim and the Taildraggers.
Two weeks later (Dec. 1-2), the SSO will present its first Classics concerts in their new Art Deco home, and the Fox will be wagging its tail once again.
Not Bored, Stoked
Giant fins on '57 Chevys, muscle cars from the Sixties, little Deuce coupes celebrating their 75th birthdays, the lowest of the "kustom" lowriders -- nearly 1,500 cars in all will flash their paint jobs at you on Friday-Saturday, Aug. 17-18, from 8 am-5 pm and on Sunday, Aug. 19, from 8 am-3 pm at the Spokane County Fair & amp; Expo Center.
