Shouts of Joy
You know those red plastic wagons that day care teachers push around downtown with about eight toddlers tethered together in each? When they go through that roofed-in breezeway between the INB Center and the Convention Center, the kids like to scream and yell, just to hear the echoes.
If you ride your bike alongside and join in the yelling, the toddlers go silent and stare at you. Then they go back to screaming.
Stolen Time
The brothers from Deadliest Catch took plenty of questions on Monday evening before retiring to the signing table for autographs and group pictures. "Form a well-behaved line," their handler intoned, though nobody seemed to want to read the book -- most asked about characters or events from the TV show. This may have been the most tattooed crowd at an Auntie's reading this side of Chuck Palahniuk. And it was SRO -- they were packed in like crab in the hold.
As the Wheel Turns
Registered participants in last week's Bike to Work Week in Spokane more than tripled expectations, with some 950 riders signing in and gearing up. The movement created such a buzz that it landed the Lilac City on Good Morning America on Thursday, after the show tracked down local commuter Eric Farmer, who was inspired to bike to work after reading a story in The Inlander about the week's festivities. GMA then turned to this paper's Tamara McGregor to produce the video for them. Two Inlander writers even made a glorious four-second cameo. Our parents were so proud.
Battle of Spokane Falls
Civil War re-enactors will whoop, holler and raise a ruckus when they train their artillery at one another (but in a friendly, historically inquisitive way) this weekend at Riverside State Park. Visit ewcav.org/spokane_event. Tickets: $7. Cannonballs will fly on Saturday and Sunday at 11 am and 3 pm and on Monday at noon.
Surf and Ski
On Memorial Day weekend, Kellogg's Silver Mountain may be open for both schussing down the slopes and getting sloshed around in their new water park. Visit www.silvermt.com or call (800) 204-6428.
