To exemplify the diversity of the arts in Spokane, we picked five people from a variety of fields for our cover. We even picked another artist to photograph them, Don Hamilton of Hamilton Photography & amp; Film.

Peggy Goodner Tan is the artistic director of Theatre Ballet of Spokane. Her troupe is teaming up with Allegro in presenting Cinderella on Oct. 17 at the Met. Harold Balazs is perhaps Spokane's most beloved visual artist. Since he works primarily in sculpture these days, he wore his welding leathers to our photo shoot. He'll be on hand for the dedication of a new steel sculpture of his at Whitworth College on Sept. 27. Anna Pearce, who is better known by her stage name, Patty Duke, has become an active member of the local theater scene in recent years, and she'll bring her Academy Award-winning credentials to Gypsy at the Civic this fall. Fabio Mechetti, in his 11th and final season as music director for the Spokane Symphony, will conduct the Symphony's season opener on Sept. 19 at the Opera House. For our token rock star, we picked Jamie Maker, one of Spokane's legendary guitar players. He's been in the SubPop band the Makers since 1995, and he also plays for Burns Like Hellfire. His two bands play on the weekend of Oct. 10 (the Makers) and Oct. 11 (Burns Like Hellfire) at the B-Side.
