CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON

Evolution -- we're no longer too freaked out by it, but in the early parts of the 20th century, the idea that humans descended from primordial pond suckers was only beginning to gain mainstream acceptance. The notion of a bestial remnant lurking in the jungle somewhere was just too tempting to ignore, and in 1954 that creature emerged from the Black Lagoon. The image of the gill-man clutching a lady -- his dank, webbed fingers groping at her soft pale skin -- sent shivers into the buttoned-down soul of America during the matinee monster heyday.
