John Gately, the former Spokane Police Guild president charged with obstructing a detective during a rape investigation of a fellow officer, testified in court Monday that he told the fellow officer that sheriff's detectives might want his DNA, but that he didn't reveal details about a pending search warrant. The jury began deliberating Monday afternoon. (Spokesman-Review)

A Spokane work release supervisor has been fired for allegedly having sex with an inmate. She had been supervisor for only a month. Detectives have not arrested her yet. (KXLY)

A professor at EWU who specializes in linguistics says Hillary Clinton's last name — two syllables that ends on a softer syllable — gives her an edge over Donald Trump in the election. Trump's last name, according to the professor, evokes a feeling of "I'm going to tell you the way it is." (Spokesman-Review)
It happened again
Another patient escaped from Western State Hospital on Monday. He was missing for less than two hours before he was caught and returned to the facility, police say. This comes just over a month after two patients climbed out of a first-story window and set off a statewide chase that led one escapee, Anthony Garver, to the Spokane area before he was caught under a pile of debris. (Seattle Times) The Associated Press has reported that there have been 185 instances in which patients escaped or walked away from the state's largest mental hospital in the last 3 1/2 years.
