Ben Frank Moss: The Whitworth Collection

Ben Frank Moss
Landscape State No. 1, 2009, oil on paper, 7 ¼ by 6 inches.
Whitworth’s most prominent alumni artist Ben Frank Moss, ’59, is a nationally renowned landscape painter and the former George Fredrick Jewett Professor of Studio Art at Dartmouth College, in New Hampshire.  Moss has exhibited extensively throughout the U.S. for more than 30 years. As a landscape painter, he seeks to establish a sense of “place” by observing light and space as they are shaped by time and season. He brings these observations into his paintings using color, form and gesture to evoke memories. The work on display in this exhibit has been curated from a large donation of nearly 300 works covering 40 years of productivity and worth $1.3 million, generously gifted to Whitworth University’s permanent art collection by Ben and his wife Jean. Sept. 11-Nov. 2; Mon-Fri 10 am-5 pm, Sat 10 am-2 pm. Opening reception Sept 18 from 5-6 pm, artist talk at 6 pm.
